 Focus Activity One: Discussion
 
Time Frame: 15 - 20 minutes
Objectives: Describe resources available to women, especially widows or divorcees during 1930 - 1945
Materials and Preparations: Use Write-on Cling Sheets and markers to describe resources
Teaching Tips: Encourage students to consider non-governmental resources that might have been available and promote student discussion on suggesting alternatives for Tillie Olsen's character in "I Stand Here Ironing."

Focus Activity Two: Look at governmental programs aimed at helping people help themselves
 
Time Frame: 35 - 45 minutes
Objective: To realize the depth of the Great Depression and how it affected people
Student Activies: Tour WPA and other Internet sites related to Great Depression
Materials and Preparations: Computers with Internet access
Teaching Tips: Bookmark the site and prepare questions to direct discussion

Focus Activity Three:  5 paragraph Essay
 
 
Time Frame: 60 minutes; students must bring completed essays and complete peer reviews in pre-determined groups
Objective: To help students see the process of composition; enable students to recognize unambiguous thesis statements and clearly supported topic sentences; provide reliable sources with accurate MLA documentation
Student Activities: Bring to class a five paragraph essay on one of the two topics below:
1.  Write an essay in which you explore how Tillie Olsen’s “I 
Stand Here Ironing” would be different if its historical setting
were changed to a setting of your choice.  Consider the changes
in plot development as well as the changes in the characters’ conflicts, reactions, and motivations.

2.  Write a five paragraph essay on your study of infant care during the 1930-1945 era. In the essay, consider the changes taking place because of increasing technology and scientific information.  (Consider that Emily’s mother sent Emily to the convalescent home on the advice of the physician, but the home was “sterile” and Emily could have no physical contact with her mother.) 

3.  Write a five paragraph  essay on topic you devise concerning "I Stand Here Ironing."  Please receive instructor's approval before writing the essay.
