OVERVIEW
This unit will complement the reading of “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen. The purpose of the unit is to facilitate an understanding of the historical and societal constraints placed on women as shown in Olsen’s story. An examination of the historical setting will enable students to determine some of the restrictions that history plays on fiction as it does on real life. The focus and the inquiry activities will afford the students background information they need to complete the required project in the application activities.
