"We were expecting a big fight. It came; it is over; the enemy is gone. I cannot give you an idea of the terrors of this battle." ---South Carolina private who fought at Bull Run |
| Choose one of the following projects:
A. You are a surgeon in charge of setting up a field hospital for wounded soldiers. Decide on the location, describe how you'll set it up, and list all the supplies you'll need including who will work at the hospital. Include in your description the types of medical procedures you will perform and how you will perform them. B. The war is over! In an effort to restore relationships in a divided community, leaders in your hometown decide to plan a cotillion. Your job is to pull this event together. Decisions you will need to make include the music, appropriate clothing, food, type of dance, and decorations. You will also need to design the invitation and decide on the menu. C. Plan a reenactment of one of the battles of the Civil War. You'll need to do everything except carry it out! Decide which battle you want to reenact, how many soldier reenactors will be involved, what will happen during the battle, what artillery you'll need, battlefield strategies you'll use, the number of casualties in the battle, and anything else reenactors plan. Your project may include maps, illustrations, descriptions and charts. D. Convey through art what life was like during the Civil War. Your exhibit will include your own drawings of anything you choose that reflects the Civil War era. You might want to include sketches of the things you have seen during your research. For example, you could include drawings of uniforms, flags, weapons, battlefield scenes, or people. Be sure to look at some of the art of the Civil War. E. Write an original song, play, or story that takes place during the Civil War. |
