Description All activities that take place in today's classroom begin with the worldview of the educator. Your perspectives affect your practices. How you view your students, their parents, your colleagues, what should be taught, how it is taught, what are your classroom policies, etc. are just a few of the numerous areas influenced by your thinking. We'll study one piece of philosophy at a time and then we'll put it all together. The material you are about to learn will help solidify and guide you in developing proper philosophical constructs for today's Christian educator. As Albert Einstein used to say, "Time for a little tink." Learning Objectives & Standards (found on syllabus) Unit Objective #1--Discuss and explain the current principles and practices in education and be able to relate them to the learner in classroom situations (Competencies 2 &7) Unit Objective #2--Create in writing a personal philosophy of education while understanding the relationship of traditional and contemporary philosophers of education.(Competency 2) Essential Questions What is the best educational philosophy and why? What is the nature of the learner? What is the role of the teacher? What is the purpose of schooling? What should be taught in school? What and how should the curriculum be determined? What teaching methods should be used? What are the distinctive characteristics of Christian education? How should the philosophy of Christian education translate into the classroom? How should the philosophy of Christian education affect the curriculum? How should the philosophy of Christian education affect the student activities? How should Christian education affect the students future lives? How should Christian education affect society? Unit Timeframe 3-4 Weeks. Instruction will be given in class detailing what lesson to begin and when the assignments are due. Grade Level This material is designed for all students in PED 203 at ORU. This is the first education course our students take. These students are education majors and are typically Freshman and Sophomores. Description of Final Student Product The final project will be a paper on your personal philosophy of education. As described below... MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY PAPER GENERAL INFORMATION: This paper must be typed, double-spaced and stapled in upper left-hand corner. No plastic covers please. The paper will consist of the following: Your personal mission statement. Your identification of which philosophical theory you believe to best represents your personal philosophy of education. Biblical principles concerning your views of education. Your Christian world view, and how you plan to incorporate God into your classroom. The paper must be between 3 and 5 pages in length. The paper must include a reference page (this is not considered into the overall length of the paper). The paper must be written according to APA style. |
