Objectives
Explore poetic elements: rhythm, rhyme, and form in various poems.

Time Frame: 3 days or more; ½ to 1 hour/day

Materials:  see bibliography
portfolios, journals, or notebooks
a variety of poetry books

Inquiry Activities: Rhythm, rhyme, form
Objectives:
    Recognize meter.
    Determine pattern.
    Recognize rhyming syllables.
    Recognize rhyme patterns.
    Differentiate line patterns.

Materials:
Rhythm Worksheet
Rhyme Worksheet
Form Worksheet

Teaching Tips:
Plan a portfolio, journal, folder, etc.
Use worksheets with your explanation.
Guide students to discover patterns.

Students:
Create headings in the organization tool.
Use worksheets to record findings.
Create a data base to sort data easily. 

Application Activity
Objective: Correctly identify elements.

Time Frame: 15minutes to 1 hour

Materials
a variety of poetry books for children
any available teaching materials

Activity: I Spy, Eureka, or Treasure Hunt
   
(Choose your own game title.)
Arrange the students into small groups.
Teacher specifies an element.
On locating an answer, stand and says I Spy
When all are up, check for answers in order.
The first to give a good answer wins 3 pts.
All other correct answers receive 1 pt.
Provide appropriate rewards at game’s end.
