1. Watch the video The Reluctant Dragon.
    Objectives:
        Introduce the fun of poetry.
        Illustrate that poetry satisfies the soul.
        Counter any stereotypes about poetry.
    Time: 30 minutes

2. Read poems aloud to students.
    Objectives:
        Illustrate rhythm and rhyme.
        Experience the sight and sound of words.
        Subject matter is unlimited.
    Time: 15-30 minutes at a time

3. Partners practice and read poems to class.
    Objectives:
        Develop public speaking skills.
        Read with appropriate inflection.    
        Plan and execute a short performance.
        Cooperate and work as a team.
    Time: as required

4. Choral Readings or Chants
    Objectives:
        Develop public speaking skills.
        Encourage cooperation.
        Perform with rhythm, but little inflection.
    Time: as required
    Materials:  see bibliography

5. Read The Mouse of Amherst book.
    Objectives:
        Connect poetry to a real poet.
        Gain insight into Emily Dickinson.
        Gain insight into a poet’s writing.
        Introduce the process of writing poetry.
        Appreciate the clever use of language.
    Time: 1 hour of reading aloud - 63 pages
