Overview

This project is designed to help students to discover and explain their "Educational Philosophy."  During this assignment students will be introduced to some of the major educational philosophers. They will also learn about the major philosophies that are prevalent in education today. 

The goal of this assignment is for the students to create their own Philosophy of Education.

Time Frame

3-4 weeks  Class meets three times a week.  Class periods are fifty minutes each.

Grade Level

Students are college freshman and sophomores.  They are beginning education majors.  The course this project is designed for is Foundations and Methods of Education.  It is their first required education course.

Oklahoma Objectives for Students in Teacher Preparation Programs

  • General Competency 2 - The teacher understands how students learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and physical development at all grade levels including early childhood, elementary, middle school, and high school.
  • General competency 5 - The teacher uses best practices related to motivation and behavior to create learning environments that encourage positive social interaction, self motivation, and active engagement in learning, thus providing opportunities for success.

Objectives
  • As a result of completing this assignment the student will be able to create in writing and presentation a personal philosophy of education while understanding the relationship of traditional and contemporary philosophers of education.
  • Students will also understand the importance of having a "Christian World View."  They will examine their world view and be able to demonstrate how it effects their educational philosophy.

Students will produce a written Philosophy of Education.  They will also create a Power Point presentation demonstrating their Philosophy.
