Activity One:Focus

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes.
Objectives:Children will decide on Essential Questions.Children will brainstorm about plants.
 Materials Needed:

Lesson:
· Teacher will read “Why Study Plants?” from the book Primarily Plants and the book A Carrot Seed.
· Students will begin a KWL chart to decide on Essential Questions to begin their unit of practice.
· Begin the chart by brainstorming what the students Know about plants, what they Want to learn, and what they Learned about this unit- to be completed at the conclusion of the unit.

Activity Two: Focus

Time Needed:  Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: Students will learn the parts of a plant.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:
· Teacher will read “Plant Parts” from the book Primarily Plants.
· Children will discuss plant parts.


Activity Three: Application

 Time Needed:  Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: The Students will label the parts of a plant correctly.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:
· Teacher will display a list of the parts of a plant. The list will be written on several pieces of paper that will be handed to each group of four students.
· The groups will be given a choice of plant pictures and will label the parts of the plant.
· Their plant complete with labels will be presented to the class.

Activity Four: Assessment

Time Needed:  Approximately 15 minutes
Objective: Evaluation of students labeling of plant parts.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:
· Peer evaluation of plants with labels attached.
· There will be a discussion of agreement or disagreement with a group’s decision.

Activity Five: Focus

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: Students will understand that healthy plants need soil, water, light, and air to grow.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:
· Teacher will read “Plant Growth” from Primarily Plants.
· Teacher will read Maytime Magic by Mabel Watts, which will be written on a chart.

                           Maytime Magic
A little seed
For me to sow
A little earth
To make it grow ….
A little hole,
A little pat ….
A little wish,
And that is that.
A little sun
A little shower
A little while
And then a flower!
· Children will discuss poem and the words in the poem that indicate what the plant needs to grow.
 Teacher will circle the words on the chart that the children indicate will be needed by the plant to grow.

Activity Six: Application

Time Needed: 1, 45 minute class period
Objective: Students will compare the growth of plants in different environments.
Materials Needed:


Activity Seven: Focus

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: Students will observe the various ways that seeds travel from the parent plant.
Materials Needed:


Lesson:

        Children will observe website http:tqjunior.thinkquest.org/3715/seeds4html.


Activity Eight: Inquiry

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: Students will research the many ways that seeds travel.
Materials Needed:


Lesson:

· The librarian will give each group a worksheet about three types of seed travel (e.g. hitchhiker, water, and air).
· The groups will research seed travel using books and encyclopedias.
· The groups will draw pictures of the seeds that utilize each of these three types of travel.
· The groups will present their findings to the class.

Activity Nine: Assessment

Time Needed:  Approximately 15 minutes
Objective: Evaluation of worksheets.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:

· The teacher will grade the worksheet.
· The presentation will not be graded.

Activity Ten: Focus

Time Needed: 2or3, 45 minute class periods
Objective: Tthe students will learn how to use  Power Point.
Materials Needed:


Lesson:

· The Library Media Specialist will teach the children how to use Power Point .

Activity Eleven: Inquiry

Time Needed: 3or 4, 45 minute class periods
Objective: Students will research their selected locale to discover the plants located there.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:

· Groups of student will research a locale (e.g. the rainforest, ocean, artic, or desert) and the plants found there.
· The librarian will help the students find information about the plants.
· The groups will also utilize books found in the classroom.

Activity Twelve: Application

Time Needed: 2-4, 45 minute class periods
Objective: The groups of students will make a PowerPoint presentation following teacher guidelines.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:

· The Library Media Specialist will help the groups make a Power Point presentation about the plants found in the locale they have chosen.
· The groups will make the presentation to the class.

Activity Thirteen: Assessment

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: Evaluation of Power Point Presentation.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:

· The teacher will evaluate the student’s Power Point presentation using Plants, Plants, Plants Rubric provided.

Activity Fourteen: Application

Time Needed: Approximately 45 minutes
Objective: The students will discuss the  plant information that they learned during this unit.
Materials Needed:

Lesson:
 
  • The children will complete the KWL chart by brainstorming about what they learned during the plant unit.
