How to Enroll

Any educator (full or part-time) or support person who is employed by a consortium member institution is eligible to attend our classes.  All participants desiring to attend an Eighth Floor class must enroll through their Advisory Committee Representative. It is as easy as listing the classes you would like to take and sending them to your ACR.

Cancellation Policy

Important!  If you need to withdraw from a class, a notification of at least 2 business days in advance of the class is required.  Consortium member institutions or the student will be billed for “no shows”.

1. Online Experience – This portion of the course provides a unique opportunity to BE the online student while exploring distance learning theory and practice. You will be immersed in the virtual learning environment while building a solid knowledge base on such key
skills as community building and facilitation to ensure student retention and engagement. February 4 – March 11, 2009 (Meets Online)


2. Creating Courses – Participants will learn the best practices of organization and the course creation process in an online learning environment. Feb 18, 2009 –

– This class is an overview of “what works” in online teaching and learning. We will examine some of the proven practices as well as what is emerging in this field. Feb 25, 2009 –

4. Questioning Techniques – Participants will examine proven techniques for developing and “asking” the right questions to insure student interaction
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO TEACH ONLINE?
The Eighth Floor’s Online Learning Series helps educators make the transition from face-to-face classroom instruction to the world of online, distance education. Participants will explore blended and fully online instruction from both the student’s and instructor’s perspective. Whether you use Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Sakai, or any other learning management system, the skills you learn and perspectives you gain can be applied to any online learning environment. We will focus on building authentic learning communities, creating successful interaction, and delivering engaging content. The series starts as a fully online class and then transitions into a blended (F2F & online) course. You are automatically enrolled in all 5 short courses when you register.

6. Project Development: (Optional) – Want to put it all in action? Set up a time and come to the Eighth Floor to work on your online component or get ahead and set up a full semester class! We are on call to answer questions, make suggestions, and offer support!
The skills and practices in our Online Learning Series are applicable to all learning management systems! However, we will be using Moodle (Open Source Freeware) as the learning platform for this series.

Intro to Second Life

Welcome to the virtual world. Second Life™ is a 3-D virtual world entirely created by its Residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of Residents from around the globe. This workshop will introduce Second Life™ as a tool to enhance education. It will begin with a presentation and discussion on how educators around the country are currently using Second Life™ in their classrooms. Learn the basics of navigation, building and scripting. But most importantly, learn how to create your own avatar and live in the world of the future!

Second Life – Intermediate

This workshop will introduce techniques for the creation of content in Second Life through hands on building and scripting projects. You will learn how to build, link, texture, and script basic objects.

Projects will include:
1. Designing & making a Second Life classroom.
2. Using media in Second Life (including Power-Point presentations).
3. Making your own school-pride T-Shirt.
4. Using scripts to make objects interactive.

This class assumes a basic knowledge of Second Life (see ‘Introduction to Second Life’) but no building or scripting skills.

Ed Tech - Level 1

Need a refresher? Or just starting out?
Are you a little wary of technology? Do you dread going to seminars on computer use? Does talk of the internet put a lump in your throat? Fear no more…. In today’s age, you can’t do much of anything without a computer being involved, but technology can be a teacher’s best friend. Our Education Technology Program is designed for educators and support personnel who need to start from the beginning, or even those who would like a basic refresher. This program is designed to allow you the opportunity to become comfortable with different areas of basic technology and will show you how to make your life easier. You will negotiate a friendly relationship with file management, Microsoft Windows, Word and PowerPoint, e-mail, finding resources on the internet, and more. Find out how to put these tools to practical use in your classroom or workspace. Instructors are skilled at working with all levels of learners and in creating a fun, learning environment. When your 2-day session is complete you will walk away with a renewed sense of confidence all while gaining the basic skills to make you successful with technology.

Upon completion of an Ed Tech class, participants will now have the option of signing up for a two-hour session with one of our Instructional Technology Coaches. A tech coach will come to your classroom and help you integrate the valuable skills you learned while in the Ed Tech class (for free). Must complete the entire Ed Tech class to participate. Directions on how to acquire an Ed Tech Coach are made available during class.

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore this new facet of the Web and take a sweeping overview of popular Web 2.0 tools (also known as the Read/Write Web). We’ll look at what teachers and students have done with several tools that are easy for you and your students to use, such as blogs, podcasting, wikis, bookmarking, social networking, learning communities, and more. Wikis are the average Joe’s version of a website! They are easily editable, collaborative, Web 2.0 tools that can be created in a matter of minutes. About Social Bookmarking?

RSS – But in a Google Way

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, but for many, the idea and application is not simple at all. This course puts “the simple” back in the mix. We’ll show you the easiest way possible to subscribe to various resources, such as newsfeeds, blogs, podcasts, wikis, etc. Participants will create Google Reader and iGoogle accounts, all while seeing how subscribing to resources on the web is the greatest invention, ever. We will look at professional and classroom applications.

Okay, so you found your college apartment and the house you lived in as a kid. What else can you do with Google Earth? Participants will learn to integrate the power of mapping with satellite images using this magnificent and free web tool. We will look at various educational uses, such as creating interactive tours or

Digital Picture Projects

The magic of digital photography is unleashed when students use pictures to explore and explain the world around them. Digital cameras are relatively cheap and easy to use with any age student. We’ll look at several classroom project ideas and create some of our own, all using two FREE tools – VoiceThread and PhotoStory3.

Working with Digital Images

You’ve taken some great pictures, but they don’t look exactly like you want. What can you do? Participants will explore what they CAN do with a digital picture once it’s on the camera using Picasa – a free Web 2.0 tool. We’ll discuss cropping, sizing, color adjustment, storage, and getting pictures ready for the web, PowerPoint, or print.
